Care and Handling In the Store

Selecting Fresh Produce

  • Select produce that is not bruised or damaged, avoiding any items with mold or cuts

  • Plan ahead and purchase the amount of produce that you will use within one week

  • When selecting pre-cut produce—such as half a watermelon or bagged salad greens—choose only those items that are refrigerated or surrounded by ice

  • If you buy produce at a farmer’s market, go early to avoid fruits and vegetables that have been sitting out all day

  • Bag fresh fruits and vegetables separately from meat, poultry and seafood products when packing them to take home from the market

  • If you are unsatisfied with the selection of produce at a grocery store, ask a produce manager if there are other options available
